Boosting Software Productivity at Block with an AI Agent

Boosting Software Productivity at Block with an AI Agent

August 18, 2025

The Challenge

During a fast-paced hackathon, fintech company Block, led by Jack Dorsey, wanted to accelerate innovation and prototype development. Manual coding and tool-building processes constrained participants’ creative output and slowed progress.

The AI-Powered Solution

To power up creativity, Block deployed “Goose,” an AI agent built in-house using Anthropic’s Claude model. Goose interfaces fluently with file systems, IDEs, and online tools via the Model Context Protocol, allowing it to execute commands, generate code snippets, produce data visualizations, and assist in feature prototyping.

Results & Impact

  • Surge in productivity during the hackathon: engineers rapidly generated multiple prototypes, with Goose scripting code, assisting non-technical staff, and reducing friction in creative workflows.
  • Lowered barriers to experimentation: Goose enabled even those unfamiliar with code to contribute prototypes and visualize ideas quickly.

Responsible integration: To maintain quality, all AI-generated artifacts were reviewed by humans, and Goose ran only on rollback-enabled systems to manage risk.

Why It Matters

  • Demonstrates real workplace empowerment: AI agents can amplify creativity, making ideation and technical experimentation faster and more accessible.
  • Highlights human–AI collaboration: Goose showcases how AI tools can augment, not replace, human ingenuity when paired with appropriate guardrails.

Reveals the future of development: Agentic AI is transforming how companies build tools, prototype ideas, and democratize innovation across teams.
